National individual Consultant to develop Rwandan Standards and Technical regulations on Agricultural Mechanization & Irrigation and to train Staff of Rwanda Bureau of Standards

Objective of the Assignment

  • Mentor three (3) Rwanda Bureau standards (RBS) officers on how to draft regulations and standards related to Mechanization and Irrigation
  • Develop a set of standards and technical regulations covering Mechanization and Irrigation Sectors including but not limited to product and machinery specifications, Codes of practice, safety of Machinery and Equipment in close collaboration with RBS Standards officers.
  • Develop a comprehensive training manual to be delivered to members of the mechanization task force, relevant staff of Rwanda Cooperative Agency, MINICOM, Cooperatives in Agriculture Sector, local government, manufacturers of agricultural machinery and parts, importers of agriculture machinery as well as maintenance operators.

I have developed following 22 Standards on Agricultural Mechanization & Irrigation and the document was approved by the National Technical Committee for Rwanda Bureau of Standards.

I am a innovative researcher, I am guiding the student’s research, which is a mandatory one. Every year I guide 7 to 10 student research every year. The following are some of the thrust areas of research:

  • Fabrication of low cost animal drawn trailer
  • Fabrication of modified mould board plough
  • Study on varying specific fuel consumption of tractor.
  • Study on specific fuel consumption of power tiller on road and field operation.
  • Study on performance evaluation of Maize thresher.
  • Effect of tillage machinery on soil moisture.
  • Effect of tractor drawn tillage machinery on crop production.
  • Development of standards for irrigation machinery (centrifugal pump, sprinkler, drip, lateral, pvc pipe, etc)
  • Development of standards for farm machinery (farm tractor, power tiller, seed drill, engine, spare parts, trailer, disc plough, disc harrow, mould board plough, etc)
  • Development of training manual for farm machinery
  • Development of hand held maize Sheller
  • Study on cost effectiveness of modern farming over traditional farming
  • Design of drip irrigation system for different crops
  • Design of sprinkler irrigation system for different crops

COMPLETED RESEARCH PROJECT (DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT OF AGRICULTURAL MACHINERY):

I have designed and successfully developed following:

      Modified mould board plough – animal drawn primary tillage implements

      Power tiller operated animal feed processing machinery

      Power chaff- cutter machine for forage crops

      Hand held maize sheller – low cost manually operated device for marginal farmers)

I was the supervisor of memoire and under my guidance, above machines were designed and developed

On-going Research project:

  • Development of multi crop manual seeder (group research project)
  • Study on specific fuel consumption of tractor and power tiller (individual research project)

I have developed two Module books (advanced Diploma and Bachelor Degree) for Agricultural Mechanization program for former ISAE (CAVM-University of Rwanda) comprising with 36 Modules for Bachelor Degree and 24 Modules for Advanced diploma.
